Research: Sam Smith for Pride cover
The pop star Sam Smith has come out as non-binary and asked to be addressed by the pronouns they/them.
“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”
“I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.” Smith described being non-binary as “your own special creation”.
In their Instagram post, Smith said they were “at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non-binary” but that their intention was to be “visible and open”.
Smith pledged to answer questions that fans may have, and cited “activists and leaders of the non-binary/trans community” that had aided their understanding of gender identity, among them the actor Laverne Cox, model Munroe Bergdorf and the charities Stonewall, Glaad and Mermaids.
Moving forward with my magazine I feel this would be a very interesting area to focus my pride cover on
Idea for a second cover
Since I was not able to successfully create the 1950's cover I was hoping to I had to come up with some ideas for a different cover. I decided to make this one about celebrating diversity as it is another very important topic in society. I decided I wanted the main cover line to be:
"Youngest self made billionaire in the world"
I thought this would be very intriguing to write about and I want to experiment with outfits and jewellery to create the perfect wealthy mise-en-scene for the cover.
Production: Pride Front cover with pride flag photoshoot
I am very satisfied with the images obtained from this photoshoot. I feel like they reflect the cover I want to create much more than when I tried to attempt it with makeup. I like how the flag can be used as a background for the cover as it will make it very vibrant and colourful which will be eye-catching for the demographic. In order to make the covers as effective as possible I will increase the vibrancy of the flag
Production: Attempts at Pride makeup cover
I set up a photoshop for this magazine cover where I wanted to play around with some ideas. I was not happy with the results and so I decided I wanted to take a different approach. I felt like these pictures didn't reflect what I was hoping to create so I decided a better way to create the pride front cover was to use a prop instead.
